“Shepard does not die after the Reaper threat is resolved, and instead goes on to live a long life. She dabbles in politics once she hits a certain age, and although marriage never appealed to her, she and Joker live together happily. He teaches up-and-coming pilots and she fights for equality and peace through a different platform. Joker always knew he would outlive Shepard, but when he wakes up one morning to find her slumped over in a chair with her old dog tags in her lap, he simply cannot put on a brave face. He always knew he would live longer, yes, but he imagined she would go out in a blaze of glory with him shouting down her earpiece. Instead, she died alone, and that is what drives Joker into isolation in his old age.”
